The Department of Law conducts ‘Forum on Contemporary Issues in Law’ with aim of enlightening the critical intellectual faculties of the students of the Department and the society at large. The Department invites scholars from diverse backgrounds to deliver lectures or to lead a discussion at the Forum. Further, we also encourage the students and the participants of FCIL to engage actively in the interaction session aftermath of the lecture
Prof. Shanthi Segarajasingham was invited to facilitate a virtual ‘Forum on Contemporary Issues in Law’ on the topic of ‘Surviving with Covid-19 through Business Development: A discussion on Fundamental Legal Framework for Doing Business’
Honorable Justice Saleem Marsoof P.C. and Former Justice of the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka was invited to facilitate a virtual ‘Forum on Contemporary Issues in Law’ on the topic of ‘A critical appraisal of Muslim Personal Law and Proposed Reforms’, on 18th September 2021 from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm. It was coordinated and moderated by Mr. Sivanesan Pradinath, Lecturer, Department of Law, UoJ. The FCIL was attended by more than 120 undergraduates of the Department of Law.
Ms. Mathuri Purujoththaman was invited to facilitate a virtual Forum on Contemporary Issues in Law on the topic of ‘LGBTQI Protection in Sri Lanka: Continuing Challenges’ on the 13th of October 2021, from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm. The event was moderated by Ms. Purathani Mathanaranjan, Lecturer, Department of Law, UoJ. This FCIL too attended by more than 150 undergraduates of the Department of Law.
Jaffna | 27th June 2022 – The Department of Law, University of Jaffna, successfully organized a thought-provoking forum under its series on Contemporary Issues in Law, titled “Understanding Election Laws”, on Tuesday, 27th June 2022 at the Library Auditorium of the University.
Jaffna | 29th August 2023 — The Department of Law, University of Jaffna, continued its acclaimed forum series on Contemporary Issues in Law with a focused session titled “Method of Acquiring State Lands and the Issues Involved”. The event took place on Tuesday, 29th August 2023, at the Arts Seminar Hall of the University.
On Monday, 25th September 2023, the Department of Law, University of Jaffna, successfully hosted a thought-provoking academic forum under the theme “Freedom of Religion and Contemporary Issues in Sri Lanka.” The event formed part of the Department’s ongoing Forum on Contemporary Issues in Law series, aimed at promoting critical legal discourse on pressing societal challenges.

University of Jaffna, February 14, 2024 – The Department of Law, University of Jaffna, successfully conducted another insightful session under its Forum on Contemporary Issues in Law series, focusing on the theme “Recent Developments in Sri Lankan Family Law.” The forum took place at the Arts Seminar Hall and commenced at 2:00 PM, drawing wide participation from law students, academics, and practitioners.
January 10, 2025 – An engaging and intellectually stimulating seminar titled “Discussion on Negotiability, Negotiable Instruments and Bills of Exchange” was successfully held on 10th January 2025 at the Seminar Hall, Faculty of Arts. The event brought together students, academics, and professionals from the fields of law and finance for a comprehensive two-hour session from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
The highlight of the seminar was the insightful presentation delivered by Mr. Chanaka De Silva PC, a highly respected legal expert and President’s Counsel. With decades of experience in commercial and financial law, Mr. De Silva shared deep legal and practical perspectives on the nature and significance of negotiable instruments in modern commerce.
