With over a decade of experience in the field of law, Mrs. Thushani Shayanthan has established herself as a leading expert in Intellectual Property Law, Law of the Sea, Public International Law, International Humanitarian Law, and Law relating to Gender Equity and Equality.

Currently, Mrs. Thushani Shayanthan is engaged in teaching and researching in the fields of Intellectual Property Law, Law of the Sea, Law of Delict, Law of Property, Public International Law, and International Humanitarian Law. Her areas of focus include the intersection of Intellectual Property Law and Technology, the legal implications of maritime activities, the evolution of delictual liability, and the protection of human rights in armed conflicts. Her research endeavors aim to contribute to the advancement of knowledge in these areas and provide valuable insights to policymakers, practitioners, and academics alike. Additionally, she is also dedicated to imparting her knowledge and experience to her students, providing them with a comprehensive understanding of the legal system and equipping them with the necessary skills to excel in their chosen field.

Mrs. Thushani Shayanthan is a highly accomplished legal professional with a distinguished career in academia and research. She currently holds the position of Head of the Department of Law at the University of Jaffna, a position she has held since March 2020.

Prior to this, she served as the Acting Head of the Department of Law from December 2019 to February 2020.e Content

In addition to her role as Head of the Department of Law, Mrs. Shayanthan also serves as a legal expert on the Advisory Board of the University Business Linkage, a position she has held since August 2020. She is also a member of the Faculty Sub Committee on Endowment, serving from November 2021 to October 2024, and a member of the Research Hub Activation Committee.

Mrs. Shayanthan is also a member of the Curriculum Development Committee for Master of Arts in Gender and Development Studies, and has served on an Interim Committee for the Gender Cell in the University of Jaffna by University Council at its Special Meeting held on 28.01.2017, which completed the task. She is a member of Students Appeals Sub-Committee of Faculty of Arts, serving from April 2018.

Furthermore, Mrs. Shayanthan has served as a pioneer committee member of the Centre for Gender Equity and Equality from 2017 to 2019, and as Chairperson for the International Conference of Contemporary Management in April 2017. She has also served as Chairperson/Member of adhoc Inquiry Committee for Preliminary Investigations and Formal Inquiries.

Mrs. Shayanthan’s academic and professional achievements are extensive, and include various other notable roles such as:

Additionally, she has contributed to the drafting of policies on Intellectual Property, Gender Equity and Equality, as well as bylaws relating to Sexual and Gender-Based Violence and Student Discipline.

In addition to her administrative and policy contributions, Mrs. Shayanthan is also a dedicated educator and coach. She has coached law students participating in the Henry Dunant Memorial Moot Court Competition in 2015, 2016, and the Asia Cup International Law Moot Court Competition in August 2015. She has also served as the Secretary of the Jaffna University International Research Conference 2016.

Mrs. Shayanthan has also served as a resource person for various workshops and seminars, including the International Workshop on ‘Basic ICT and Research Tools for Law Students’, and the Staff Induction Programme of the University of Jaffna, and the sensitization Programmes for Staff on Gender Equity and Equality.

She has also served as a reviewer for research papers and conferences, such as the 4th Annual Research Conference Trinco – 2019 and the Jaffna University International Research Conference 2018.

Additionally, she has also served as a guest lecturer for undergraduate students at the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies.
