Under the resonant theme \u201c<strong>Law: Gentle Civilizer of change- Research, Reframe and Rebuild\u201d<\/strong> the conference served as a dynamic platform for thought leadership, dialogue, and reflection on the evolving role of law in contemporary society.<\/p>\n<p>Day One \u2013 24th January 2026<\/p>\n<p>The first day commenced with a distinguished opening ceremony featuring:<\/p>\n<p>Chief Guest: His Lordship Justice Sithambarampillai\u00a0Thurairaja, Judge of the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka on \u201cArtificial Intelligence in the legal profession: with special reference to digitization\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Guest of Honour: Hon. Justice Rohantha Abeysuriya PC, The President of the Court of Appeal<\/p>\n<p>Special guest:<\/p>\n<p>Ms. Saranya Hasanthi Urugodawatte Dissanayake, Additional Secretary for Ocean Affairs, Environment &amp; Climate Change and Consular Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism on \u201cOcean Governance and Diplomacy in the Indian Ocean\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Keynote Addresses:<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Mario Gomex, Executive Director, International Centre for Ethnic Studies &#8211; \u201cConstitutional Change in Deeply Divided Sri Lanka\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Zara Mandviwalla Akbarallt, Barrister-at-law &#8211; \u201cCommercial law and digital economy\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The day fostered meaningful discourse on constitutionalism, legal education, and citizen empowerment. Emerging scholars and students also presented innovative research papers, reflecting fresh legal perspectives on critical national issues.<\/p>\n<p>Day one concluded with the cultural Program at Jaffna Thiruvalluvar Cultural Center.<\/p>\n<p>Day Two \u2013 25th January 2026<\/p>\n<p>Day two continued the spirit of intellectual exchange with a new lineup of keynote speakers and in-depth panels:<\/p>\n<p>Chief Guest: His Lordship Justice Yasantha Kodagoda, Judge of the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka on \u201cUnderstanding the Criminal Justice System of Sri Lanka and the means by which its efficacy could be enhanced\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Guest of Honour: Justice Dr. Frank Gunawardena, Judge of the Court of Appeal.<\/p>\n<p>Special address:<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Vivekananthan Puvitharan, PC on \u201cEqual Access to Justice in Sri Lanka: Bridging the gap between Law and the lived reality\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Prof. Shanthi Segarajasingham on \u201cLaw as a gentle civilizer of Change-from student to undergraduate-to graduate-to Professional\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Special Guest &#8211; Ms. Haripriya Jeyasundara, PC on \u201cWhen Justice Is Negotiated: The Rule of Law and the Limits of Prosecutorial Power\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Panel discussion and technical session held throughout the day and a student presentation panel, sessions explored critical themes such as:<\/p>\n<p>Featured Panel:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Future of Law: Governance, Technology, Society, and the Global Economy\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Moderated by Mr. Danuka Bandara, and panellists consisting with Mr. G. Luwie, Dr. Bhahirathi, Prof. Sarveshwaran, Ms. Aysha, Dr. Arjuna and tackled with the panel tracks such as;<\/p>\n<p>Governance and Rule of Law<\/p>\n<p>Law and Technology<\/p>\n<p>Social and Cultural Dimensions<\/p>\n<p>Environment and climate change<\/p>\n<p>Commercial and Digital Economy<\/p>\n<p>The conference concluded with a reaffirmation of legal education\u2019s pivotal role in shaping equitable and sustainable societies.<\/p>\n<p>A Note of Gratitude<\/p>\n<p>The Organizing Committee extends heartfelt thanks to all Co-convener Surana and Surana International Attorneys and to the retired Justice Priyantha Jayawardena, guests, speakers, participants, and volunteers who made JILC \u201926 a resounding success.
